As one of the chaperones on this year's Shanghai International Sister Cities Youth Camp, I had the absolute privilege of accompanying five incredible students from across Queensland on an unforgettable cultural adventure. Our QLD team was the only group representing Australia, joining over 130 students and teachers from 22 countries around the world.
Hosted by the Pudong New Area Education Bureau, the two-week program was built around the theme “Communication, Cooperation, Friendship, Understanding." Every day was filled with hands-on, engaging experiences that introduced students to both traditional Chinese culture and cutting-edge modern innovation. Just a few of the many highlights included:
- Experiencing intangible cultural heritage like wearing Hanfu, creating sugar paintings, performing with shadow puppets, and decorating lacquered fans
- Making and releasing lanterns into the river and watching fireflies under the stars
- Visiting the historic town of Wuzhen and taking in Shanghai's modern architecture, including the Bund and Shanghai Tower.
- Exploring the world of AI, where students tried robot-made coffee, watched robots kick footballs and interacted with robot “people" and robot “dogs" that responded to the audience
- Watching a breathtaking eco-friendly drone show at Haichang Theme Park, creatively matching the theme of the park while showcasing the beauty of sustainable technology
- Participating in various high-tech safety training simulations
- Sharing a local lifestyle during the “Be a Shanghainese for a Day" activity with host families
It was incredible to see our students step outside their comfort zones, connect across cultures, and represent Queensland with pride, enthusiasm, and kindness.
🙏 A huge thank you to the Global Engagement team within the Department of Education International for supporting us through this journey — from planning to preparation to returning home. Their care and guidance made this experience possible from start to finish.
