In our ever-changing society, studying English empowers students to think critically, communicate effectively and engage with the world around them.  At Centenary Heights State High School, English subjects develop students' literacy, creativity and analytical skills through engagement with diverse genres and text types.  Our programs are informed by The Australian Curriculum and QCAA Syllabuses and foster deep understanding, ethical reasoning and confident self-expression.  Whether students are exploring literature, crafting persuasive arguments or responding to contemporary issues, they are building the skills needed for success in school, work and life.  English is more than just a subject - it is the foundation for lifelong learning and active citizenship.

The study of English is compulsory in all year levels.  In Senior, and Semester 2 of Year 10, students select the English subject they wish to study.  There are no prerequisites for studying English, however, if a student wants to study a General syllabus in Year 11 and 12, they must achieve a C or higher in the relevant Taster in Year 10.

Our Junior Secondary (7-10) English program has been developed using Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum.  In these formative years, students develop essential skills in writing, reading, speaking and critical thinking.  They learn to create cohesive written, spoken and multimodal pieces, analyse and interpret a variety of texts, and express ideas using language suited to different contexts and audiences.

In Senior Secondary, students study a General or Applied Queensland syllabus of their choice.  These syllabuses "build on student learning in the Prep to Year 10 Australian Curriculum" (ACAA, 2025).  As such, students develop advanced skills in analysing and creating texts, refining their ability to communicate with purpose and sophistication.  Additionally, they hone their ability to interpret complex ideas, evaluate perspectives, and craft eloquent written, spoken and multimodal responses for diverse audiences and contexts.

Further information about English subjects offered at CHSHS can be found in the related links section of this webpage or in our curriculum handbooks.
