Role of the Secondary Guidance Officer
Our Guidance Officers are available to assist students and parents with any matter relating to the school. In particular, enquiries in relation to personal and vocational matters are able to be discussed in a confidential environment. Appointments may be made through the school office.
The school Guidance Officers are responsible for providing professional expertise, leadership and support to school communities and networks in the development and implementation of plans, programmes, and procedures to assist students in achieving positive educational, developmental and lifelong learning outcomes.
A key aspect of this role at Centenary Heights State High School is to collaboratively negotiate, develop and implement programmes for students that have a focus on preventative and early intervention strategies; are responsive to identified personal, social, emotional and educational needs; and aim to foster resilience and personal skills development.
Guidance Officers are also regularly called upon to provide psycho educational assessment, individual student support and recommendations to increase access to learning for students. Guidance Officers partner with parents/carers to implement reasonable adjustments recommended by health professionals.
In addition, Guidance Officers play an important leadership role in the systemic changes that occur in schools. This involvement often includes the participation in the development and implementation of new school policies which can impact upon the entire school community. As part of this process, Guidance Officers can provide training to school staff in relation to Education Queensland policies and government legislation.
Guidance Officers work collaboratively with members of the Student Wellbeing Team to improve the learning outcomes of students. The Wellbeing Team meet weekly to assess the needs of individual students and facilitate appropriate interventions for students from Year 7 to Year 12.
