Hello and welcome to the world of learning through the USQ Head Start and UQ Enhanced Studies programs (ESP) at Centenary Heights. The programs offer a range of diverse and challenging university subjects that can offer a pathway to future study and careers.

I am Emily Hockins and I am the Head Start Coordinator and ESP Mentor for our school. My teaching background is in English and Humanities and I also coordinate our Pre-service Teachers.

At Centenary Heights, some of our students begin their tertiary education journey through these programs.

The advantages of undertaking a Head Start course:

the first subject is free. Subsequent subjects cost $395. (Student amenity fee of $36 and textbooks still need to be purchased).
successful completion gives guaranteed entry into a related course if USQ is placed as the number one choice of QTAC.
gain 2 QCE points upon successful completion.

The advantages of undertaking the Enhanced Studies Program:

obtain 2 QCE points upon successful completion.
drop one point in the Tertiary Entrance rank.
one bonus point can be gained upon successful completion.

Over recent years we have witnessed numerous students experience great success in their chosen programs and have seen huge gains in self-confidence as they begin defining the direction of their future studies.

Requirements

To be successful in this program, students need to be self-motivated, present a report card with a ‘B’ average with their application form, maintain good results in their school subjects and have good time management skills.

Some thoughts for consideration

Study requires perseverance and commitment on behalf of any student, and this is especially so for any student who undertakes tertiary studies while still in Year 10, 11 or 12.

It is important that students and parent/s /carer/s understand the significance of various aspects of this study commitment:

# USQ Head Start applications are available to Centenary Height’s students at the following times and subject to the following conditions:

- Year 10 - Summer Semester (S3) only and subject to:

a) students attaining an B standard across their subjects in both Semester 1 Year 10 and Term 3 Year 10 Report cards

b) Approval by the Head Start Coordinator and relevant Deputy Principal / Principal

c) Acceptance by the University of Southern Queensland

- Year 11 – Semester 2 and 3 only and subject to:

a) students attaining a B standard across their subjects in their most recent Semester Report card

b) Approval by the Head Start Coordinator and relevant Deputy Principal / Principal

c) Acceptance by the University of Southern Queensland

- Year 12 – Semester 1 and 2 only and subject to:

a) students attaining a B standard across their subjects in their most recent Semester Report card

b) Approval by the Head Start Coordinator and relevant Deputy Principal / Principal

c) Acceptance by the University of Southern Queensland

d) Approval to withdraw from a subject in lieu of participation in a Head Start subject will be dependent on approval by the school

# UQ Enhanced Studies Program applications are available to Centenary Height’s students at the following times and subject to the following conditions:

- Year 12 – Semester 1 only and subject to:

a) students attaining a B+ standard across their subjects in their Semester 1 and Term 3 Year 11 Report Cards

b) Approval by the Head Start Coordinator and relevant Deputy Principal / Principal

c) Acceptance by the University of Queensland

d) Approval to withdraw from a subject in lieu of participation in an ESP subject will be dependent on approval by the school

If the student is studying a USQ Head Start or UQ ESP subject in an external mode, there is the need for commitment to regular study, keeping up to date with course work, completion of assessment BOTH for the university course and for school subjects
If the student is studying a USQ Head Start subject in an on campus mode, then students are to negotiate with their classroom teachers, a suitable arrangement for both parties, that allows them to keep up with school work that is missed due to their attendance at university timetabled lectures and tutorials
Census Date is an extremely important concept that is required to be understood in any commitment to university studies. If you withdraw from a course before census date there is no academic penalty however if you withdraw after this date and you have a failure for this course, this is listed on your academic record FOREVER.
If you are experiencing any difficulties with your studies both at university or as a consequence back at school, you must discuss this with Ms Castles, the school co-ordinator of Head Start programs, at least one week prior to census date. This will allow for liaison to occur between the school and USQ / UQ and hopefully arrive at a beneficial outcome that will allow you to successfully continue in your chosen course.
If your USQ Head Start or UQ Enhanced Studies commitment necessitated an adjustment to your school program, that resulted in the study of five school subjects and your university course, and you elected to withdraw from the course, (after discussions with the co-ordinator), you will be required to return to a full school program of six subjects.
Assessment items at university as part of the two available programs are expected to be completed in the same manner as assessment at school. If a commitment has been made to study within the program you are acknowledging that you will be meeting the assessment requirements of your course. If you are experiencing difficulties in meeting deadlines you need to follow USQ or UQ policy in regards to this plus consult with the school co-ordinator.
