Career Pathways

Tim Ryan, HOD, Career Pathways

Welcome to the World of Employment!

Work Experience

Work experience is often the foundational starting point for the transition to employment. Any student in Year 10, 11 or 12 is able to undertake work experience at a time suitable to themselves and the school. A period of five days is generally utilised to begin with. This may take place either one day a week for five weeks, or for five days in a row (perfect for the school holidays).

Please see the ‘Related Links’ to learn more about the process of signing up for work experience.

School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs)

"The best thing since sliced bread" is how many students and parents have described SATs.

Centenary Heights has offered students the opportunity to undertake a SAT since 1998. During that time, almost 1000 students have been signed to a SAT, and many have gone on to fulltime work in that area and are now qualified tradespeople/workers.

While SATs are available in a wide variety of areas (as per the list below), the Retail and Hospitality industries are providing the most opportunities in the current environment. The benefits of completing a SAT, in addition to being engaged in paid employment, are endless. They can provide students with knowledge and understanding that simply cannot be transferred within a school classroom.
